To create this cute Georgia O'Keefe inspired crab, I first made a viewfinder, found a picture I wanted to paint and then used the viewfinder to locate a fun, close-up portion of a crab. Once I found the portion I wanted, I sketched the crab lightly on watercolor paper and then started watercolor painting. I attempted to only use colors I had mixed first which was a fun and new experience for me, one which I loved! I did have to re-do this crab once because on my first go-around the black for the eyes ended up bleeding everywhere throughout the orange so I learned to let all the paint dry before starting a darker color. Some of the elements I worked especially hard on was the shading under the shell and mixing colors on the shell by blotting on the paint with a napkin.
My Notan was created by cutting shapes and designs out of a small piece of black construction paper and then gluing every piece mirrored onto a 9X12 piece of white construction paper. When I started this design, my only inspiration was to create organic and geometric shapes until I added the smaller details which were actually based on my husband. For the smaller details I did a Z for his initial, a sun and a moon to describe our personalities and the bubbles to describe one of my favorite dates that we went on. One problem I ran into was the fact that the white pencil was hard to erase so I actually had to color the entire black paper with Sharpie to make it darker and get rid of the pencil. I also forgot to keep track of where each piece went after I cut it out so piecing the diamond triangle back together took a long time. Another difficulty came with cutting out shapes in the middle of the paper. I never was able to find a clean way to cut out these shapes even after re-doing the project a few times. If I could figure that out, I would create a design with a lot more center elements to make the design more detailed.
I created this foil square by taking a 6"X6" piece of cardboard and drawing the zebra design in pencil first and then tracing over the lines with a hot glue gun. I then covered the cardboard with foil and smoothed out the foil over the glue with a Q-tip. I finished the design by coloring in the space with colored Sharpies. I chose the subject matter of a zebra because the design had to organic and I really love drawing animals because it is easy to add detail and texture on them. The only problem I ran into while creating this piece was the fact that the hot glue came out thicker than I had thought it would so I had to re-do this once and slowly apply the glue in a thinner fashion. Overall, this project turned out exactly how I wanted and I seriously loved getting to play with the color and texture of the zebra's hair in order to create a vibrant design.
The Mandala that I created above is all about me including my likes, interests and personality. This project had to be symmetric so I started out by creating the different sized shapes and then drawing guide lines (which were later erased) to help guide my symmetry. Once I had the outline I started on the design, basing the inspiration of every element on me. For my likes/favorites I drew tigers, lilys, and night skies. For my interests I drew Nintendo gaming symbols and the word ART. I wove these elements together with tree branches as a symbol for my family and how they are in every part of my life and then I colored everything very colorful because I see myself as a bright and happy person. This project did end up turning out how I hoped, but I found that it was a lot harder to create perfect symmetry than I had thought. To achieve the symmetry, I had to draw the elements in one section, trace it, and then flip and re-trace the design in the next section which sometimes got messy, or the lines were off messing up the whole project. If I were to do this again I would probably chose simpler elements so it wasn't as time consuming, however I do love this artwork because it describes me perfectly and I honestly wouldn't change a thing now that it is finished and complete.
